Soup is food for the soul and nourishment for our bodies. There’s nothing like a nice bowl of hot, delicious homemade soup on a cold winter’s night. But imagine — all the work! all the time spent every night, slaving over a pot of soup! Wouldn’t it be easier to have a vast array of homemade soups at your fingertips in your freezer? Fear not, my friends. National Soup Swap Day is on January 23 this year, and the uvScene is participating, representing the Upper Valley in full force! This year, we’re taking it to the streets by meeting at the Main Street Museum in White River Junction.

If you’re not familiar with the concept, the Soup Swap has been moving eastward from the Pacific Northwest for the last 6 years, aided by the powerful combination of delicious soup and the internet. The premise is simple:

• everyone makes 6 quarts of soup to share
• soup is frozen in 1 quart containers (like the ones in the photos)
• bring them to the Soup Swap on Jan 23
• SWAP!
• take home and enjoy!

It’s really that simple. So crack open the cookbooks, get Aunt Esther’s family recipe out from the lockbox, and start making that soup. We will be meeting at the Main Street Museum at 5:30pm, with the “telling of the soup” taking place promptly at 6, followed by the swap. We’ll have some cheese and wine to share while we mingle and talk about the soups that our local chefs (that’s you) have whipped up. This should be an easy enough time for people to swing in after work, swap the soup, and head home in time for dinner.

The one other thing we’re asking is that in addition to the soup you’re making, if everyone could bring two cans of soup to donate to a local food pantry. At this time of year, it seems simple enough for us to be able to share with others.
