Based upon the growing trend of Soup Swapping — it’s sweeping the nation — the UV has decided to be at the forefront of this next big thing. Here’s the original blog that tells about it — soupswap.com — and we’re bringing this to the Upper Valley as a way to get people cooking, get people trading soup, and to get people to expand their tastes.
We had our first meeting on Tuesday, Feb 27, 2007 and it was a smashing success. Four soups were traded, and everyone was very excited to try out the goods. Check it out!

We featured:
- Amy’s Cassoulet with chicken, bratwurst, white beans and more
- Shelby’s Pasta e Fagioli
- Val’s Black Bean Soup
- Helina’s Crab & Corn Chowder
Wine & cheese was had while we chilled and enjoyed the company of a winter’s evening spent dreaming of delicious soup! Stories about the soups were swapped — it’s amazing to me how intertwined food, especially soup, can be with various aspects of our lives and remind us of good times had in the past.
Photos here.
We’re getting ready to do this again in about 2 months, once everyone’s soups have been depleted and we need some more nourishment for our soul.
Suffice to say, the rules are pretty simple.
You bring six 1 quart containers of frozen soup of one kind. We will then draw numbers and take turns picking out different soup. You will then leave with six 1 quart containers of different soup. Bring whatever soup you like to cook best. For the vegetarians among you, we don’t set rules on type of soup to bring, though usually there’s more than a few really delicious veggie options, but be forewarned it could be that you end up with 4 veggie soups and two meat soups you’ll have to share with your meat eating pals. Of course, when you do this, you will be regaled as a hero.
The most common question is “Can you have a proxy?” The answer is yes, of course, you just have to figure out how to get your soup to where it needs to be. And then figure who’s going to draw numbers for you. Proxies pick last in order.
