We decided not to grow a garden this season. In order to promote our local economy, reduce our carbon footprint and keep our spending focused, we decided to invest in two CSA programs. CSA , community supported agriculture, provides a method for you to buy straight from the farm, and share in the harvest.

farm-stand.jpg Last year, I took strong notice of Autumn Harvest farm at the local farmers markets. They always had a very strong selection and quality of product. I would actually go to their booth last, because I knew I could buy everything I needed there. So I would visit all the other vendors first and buy what they had that looked good before spending the rest of my budget at Autumn Harvest. The fact that the farm is only 3.5 miles down the road from our house doesn’t hurt the issue either. This season we will pick up our weekly half-share on Thursday. We are both looking forward to the experience! We also elected to partake in the flowers and herbs program, which allows you unlimited fresh herb clippings and 25 flower stems / week. Autumn Harvest still has a few slots left for their CSA program. Which starts on June 15th and goes through October.
Not to put all our eggs in one basket, we also bought a half-share at Kildeer Farm. The Kildeer Farmstand is located just a mile from where I work and their CSA program is extremely flexible and offers a 6% return on purchases in the store. I shopped their stand quite a bit last year, which is far more convenient and less hassle than that Norwich farmers market, or many of the local farmers markets. Kildeer Farm has a selection of everything basic. My personal favourite last season were their: Jalepenos, German Golden Butter Potatoes, and parsnips. Based on the convenience and flexibility, our plan is to use the weekly produce from Autumn Harvest as the base of our summer diet, and then use Kildeer Farm to supplement and back up the weekly share.

By the way, if you are out route 4A, the Autumn Harvest farmstand is open daily now 9am - 6pm. They have some amazing fresh eggs and a great selection of products from local wines to bacon wrapped scallops to farm grown turkey cutlets. I highly recommend you check out Autumn Harvest Farm stand next weekend. They will host a local wine & cheese tasting May 17 and May 18.

Some of us are getting to the age where we may be providing some level of care for our parents as well as our own families. It is a lot of work and stress to be in that position and the world of health care can be confusing.

The VNA & Hospice of VT and NH (where I work) is putting on a free community education event called Caring for Mom and Dad. Dr. Dennis McCullough is giving this lecture based on his upcoming book titled My Mother, Your Mother that will be released in February of 2008. Following his lecture there will be a discussion panel made up of VNA & Hospice social workers and clinicians. This is a good opportunity to learn more about caring for family members and to talk to medical professionals about questions you may have.

We will be holding this event four times this month (click on the poster to see the full size version) with the first one on Tuesday October 16th at the Upper Valley Senior Center in Lebanon, NH. The event starts at 5:30pm with refreshments and registration. The lecture and panel discussion goes from 6 to 8pm.

See the event flyer for dates and locations for the events in Woodstock, VT, Springfield, VT and Brattleboro, VT. The VNA & Hospice is able to offer this program thanks to a grant from the Upper Valley United Way and a generous donation from Hypertherm.

-A- Graduates from k9 massage school on Monday. This weekend is the NESDC annual trade fair. So we will have a table and start talking to kennels about working with them and….. -A- gave away a couple prizes for the raffle as well.

We have some nice trifold brochures to print out and fold up for interested parties. We were debating the methods printing, and considered to send the file to a mega-chain store. I decided to check out the local copy store. 10 minutes later I had an email:

Job Received The Gnomon Copy Internet server has received your job, Tracking #…..

I’ll be sure to post a follow up about the outcome / service.

Melanie from Listen Community Services sent us an email containing information about a few volunteer opportunities. She writes,

“We are in need of 3 people to form a dinner team for the community dinners. We have a slot open in November and I was wondering if anyone out there would be interested in giving us a hand. If you are interested please feel free to call or E-mail me back with any information. Thank you!”

“We have a teen Center “The Junction” in WRJ. I have come up with an idea to have some people come over and do some volunteer projects with the Young Adults over there. I am very new at this position but not to the company, I know this would be a good idea if we can come up with some projects and some volunteers. If anyone has any ideas PLEASE feel free to let me know. If you want more information about volunteering at Listen Please contact me at, 603-448-4553. Or better yet just stop by. Thank you!!!! Hope to hear from you!”
